Somehow we are halfway through summer already! If you are looking for a fun getaway with kids this summer but don’t feel like packing up the mini-van for a long road trip, consider heading to Grapevine for a family-friendly staycation. Each summer the Gaylord Texan offers a new and festive theme for their summer guests. This year, the 14th annual Summerfest is called “A Lone Star Adventure”. Summerfest lasts May 26 – Sept 4 so you still have time to book your stay!
The best part about the Lone Star Adventure is that you don’t actually have to be a guest of the hotel to join in all the action. You can purchase tickets online, or at the hotel, for any of the activities that appeal to your family. Make sure to check out our Coupon section below for a promo code if you purchase online. If you decide to stay overnight, you are in for a treat because you will also gain access to the Gaylord’s waterpark, Paradise Springs! Only hotel guests are permitted to the water park.
Though the Gaylord in Grapevine always has a Texan flare, during this summer’s theme you will see the resort’s atrium on Texas overload. From gigantic cowboy boots to real cowboy’s spinning lassos, you will definitely feel as though you’re in days of well…cowboys and lassos. Some of the activities during the Lone Star Adventure include canvas painting (the day I was there they were setting up to paint armadillos), Junior Chef’s Camp, a panning adventure where kids can pan for Fool’s Gold and gems in a sparkling mineral cave, and solving a puzzle to get out of an Escape Room. If you’re not interested in participating in any of the activities, feel free to enjoy a walk through the impressive grounds and snap some selfies with all the fun and exciting props located throughout the atrium.
Since we were there on a Saturday evening, we got to see a 20-minute live-action show called Legends of the Lone Star Wild West Show. The show includes Gunfighters, Saloon Girls, a Trick Roper, and the hero, Cactus Charlie! If you book a room facing the atrium like we did, you can even watch it from the comfort of your own balcony if you’ve got early bedtimes like my kids. The show started at 8 PM (AKA past bedtime, especially after a long day at the waterpark).
If you are staying at the hotel, do not miss their waterpark, Paradise Springs. The 10-acre outdoor pool and lazy river has DJ music, games, underwater photography, hair braiding, airbrush tattoos, lawn games, slides, zip-lines, food, a gift shop and a full bar. Poolside waiters are at the ready to serve your every need. If you’re celebrating an occasion, or just don’t want to search for a lounge chair (GET THERE EARLY they fill up quickly) consider renting a cabana for the day and having your own private space, waiter and shade. Make sure to check out our Summer’s Top 10 Product List for some great essentials you’ll want, nay NEED, to have at the pool.
Each Friday night the resort has a firework display. Even if you can’t make it to the hotel for all this summer fun, if you’re in the area you can sneak a peek at the festive fireworks in the sky. Enjoy the rest of your summer, friends!
