Growing up in the country, I knew nothing of Recreation Centers. If you have never been, a recreation center is a place open to the public where you can play sports, exercise, and partake in various activities for all ages. My first and only experience with a rec center occurred during college at the University of Texas at Austin where we had amazing facilities. My fellow college kids and I got to swim, play in rec sports leagues, exercise and participate in fitness classes. It was awesome! Since then, I haven’t thought for a second about recreation centers.
That is until one of my neighbors told me about one in our area. She and I were discussing my 4-year-old daughter’s desire to take dance lessons. I was apprehensive to join a dance studio because of the cost and commitment but really wanted my oldest daughter to see if she enjoyed dance class.
“Hurst Rec Center has tons of really inexpensive classes you could try for 8 sessions at a time. If she likes it, great! If not, you are only out $30.”
WHAT?! $30 and no huge commitment?! Obviously, I had to check it out.
The Hurst Rec Center not only has ballet, tap, gymnastics, and art classes, but also a HUGE amount of other activities and even a PickleBall League (Click HERE for the full list). Chisholm Aquatics Center is pretty fantastic and right next door but is currently closed for the Fall/Winter.
My only concern was the fact that I am not a Hurst resident, but rather Fort Worth. As I came to find out, it didn’t matter my city of residence. I visited the facility, registered my family in person and was allowed to register for classes online. The benefit to living in Hurst is you can register before non-residents.
**Side note**During our visit, we discovered this wonderful playground at the Hurst Rec Center, right across from the amazing Tennis Courts.
And for folks in the Dallas area, be sure to check out Lake Highlands Recreation Center. Their calendar of activities and programs might be a great way to get out of your house and meet enjoy some fun with your littles!
What is your favorite Recreation Center? Be sure to comment so we can all enjoy!
